Do Motorcycles Have Alternators? The Yes-and-No Case

Yes. Most gasoline motorcycles have an alternator: Cycle World’s technical account and Harley-Davidson’s service manual both identify a crank-driven rotor and stationary stator that produce alternating current, which a regulator-rectifier converts into battery-charging direct current. The case for “no” uses alternator to mean the separate, belt-driven unit common in cars. Why do some people say motorcycles do not have alternators?

Battery-electric motorcycles sit outside this gasoline-bike dispute. Shindengen Electric Manufacturing places DC/DC converters in its “Electric motorcycle / Micro mobility” catalog. With no combustion engine turning a charging rotor, their low-voltage supply follows a different route.

Where is the alternator on a motorcycle?
